MediView MediView is a vertical portal, aimed at the medical profession. It provides details on medical information, research and drugs, as well as access to medical records. Scenario 1: It's 11.30pm and Dr Smith, a GP, as been called out on an emergency visit. He does not know the patient and has no knowledge of the patient's medical history. On arrival, he finds that the patient is complaining of severe abdominal pains and is proving unhelpful in fully explaining his symptoms or medical history. Dr Smith logs into MediView using his PDA, selects the 'Medical Records' option, and keys in the patient's name and postcode. He is now able to view the records, which tell him that the patient has a history of alcohol abuse. He is also able to see that the patient's own doctor was called out 3 days ago to treat exactly the same problem and which drugs (if any) were prescribed or administered. Dr Smith can now make an informed decision on how to treat the patient - he can either treat the patient in the same manner as the patient's own doctor, or refer him to hospital. Scenario 2: Jane is a Casualty nurse. Paramedics have just brought a patient into the Accident and Emergency department whom relatives believe has taken an overdose of pills. The paramedics have the pill bottle so Jane is able to see what type of pills the patient has taken. Traditionally, Jane would now call the National Poisons Centre to find out the implications of the overdose such as how many of the specific pill had to be taken in order to be dangerous or life-threatening. She would then need to wait for The National Poisons Centre to get back to her with the information. But because Jane is a registered user of MediView, she is able to quickly login to MediView via a normal fixed-line telephone in Casualty. MediView recognises Jane and presents Jane with the options relevant to her position. She can now navigate her personalised version of the MediView site using her voice or the telephone keypad and is able to access the National Poisons Centre database. This database then gives Jane the information she needs to correctly treat her patient. |
